Working While Abroad? Stay Professional And Productive

With the power and innovation of the internet, many people are taking the opportunity to work in more scenic and cultural unique locations. Whether it’s through self-employed or a very understanding company, many people are advancing in their chosen career while also living in a new country.

In fact, working abroad is becoming increasingly popular with today’s younger generations. Of course, this presents a whole new series of challenges. Not least of all is the task of separating your holiday and work mind-sets. When there are beaches to enjoy, culture to soak up and an entire country to explore, it can be difficult to stick to your professional duties.

Yet you should always remember that it is your work that supports your ability to enjoy your travels, not the other way around. Maintaining my productivity has been a vital part of my ability to travel frequently. I can see places I want to explore, yet my clients know I still deliver the best results regardless of my location. Here are 5 of the best ways I know to stay professional and productive while abroad.

Travel At a Slower Pace

When you’re on a work-free holiday, it’s easy to explore the stunning area as quickly as possible, regardless of how much time you will actually have to spend moving around. However, you will quickly find this isn’t useful when you need to work. When you’re constantly packing, unpacking and finding somewhere to stay, there’s little time to sit down and focus on work – even after you find a new wifi-spot.

A slower travelling pace is more ideal, as you can get into your stride. I’ve found staying in one place for at least for 4 or 5 days at the minimum. This gives me the chance to get into a regular working habit before I need to move again.

You should also remember that embracing a new culture requires time to acclimatise and adapt. A slower travel pace gives you more time to do this without interrupting your workflow.

This was the most useful when I journeyed between Turkey and the United Kingdom on a regular basis. I would spend months at a time in Turkey, with small periods in the UK. It was these transitional periods, however, that vastly disrupted my productivity.

As an added bonus, travelling at a slower rate means you don’t run out of new places very easily. Even if big countries such as Turkey, constantly moving means you can explore entire regions quicker than you might imagine.

Always Know Your Internet Options

As nice as it might sound to enjoy the natural views in a rural village, have you considered the availability of internet access? Wherever you go, you should always make this a priority. How else can you get any work done?

Take a lesson from one of my mistakes. When I first explored Turkey, I would venture to quieter, rural areas, only to find little to no internet connections at all. Not everywhere has coffee shops or wi-fi hotspots like the big cities do!

I always recommend doing your research first. Don’t just count on your hotel or local residence, as there may be limits or costs to this usage. If you want to have the safest, most reliable option, sign up for a mobile data plan so you can connect to the internet anywhere you can get a signal.

Find and Use Coworking Spaces

Sometimes, even when abroad, a professional environment can really drive you to get the work done. If you’re in a big city, it’s likely you can find some coworking space available. These offer a great space to get some work done, while also meeting like-minded professionals (and the occasional nomad, like yourself).

Other than helping you maintain a professional mind-set, working alongside others allows you to bounce ideas or even do a little networking. These spaces are typically friendly to all walks of life, so you can experience an interesting blend of fellow foreigners and local freelancers.

Get Into a Morning Habit

Professional workers get up in the morning, holiday makers do not. When you’re travelling abroad, remember that you are in the former category. While it may feel like a vacation, you also need to earn your keep. Wherever you are, do what the locals do in the morning and prepare as if you had to be in the office by 8.00 am sharp.

This includes taking time to exercise and eat breakfast before you sit down with your laptop. I find this greatly improves productivity and, come lunchtime, I’ve usually got a lot of my work done. This way, I can explore and have fun in the afternoons, knowing I don’t need to stop and get back to work.

As an added benefit, this gives me plenty of time away from work and discover some new inspiration. Personally, I’ve found an afternoon stroll through the local streets gives me plenty of new and creative ideas for Muslim dresses, but this wouldn’t happen if my mind was still preoccupied with an unfinished assignment.

Find the Right Friends

Travelling abroad is an excellent way to befriend unique and interesting individuals, but you still need to choose your friends wisely. You may find fellow travellers but not all of them will also be working, like you. As such, you need to be able to turn down their offers for mid-week parties and weekend adventures.

While there is nothing wrong with this company, it’s better to find people who work and travel as well. I’ve always found these people to be more understanding of your own needs, encouraging your productivity rather than infringing on it. These people always understand your situation and are a great way to swap ideas, skills and networking opportunities. If that’s not enough, they can also help you enjoy your free time, since they also won’t be looking to stay up until 4.00 am.

Ultimately, working away from home gives you a unique and fantastic opportunity to explore the world without the restrictions of the typical 9 to 5. Yet your ability to work is your means to keep on travelling and living abroad, so don’t throw this chance away due to a lack of productivity. These tips may not be the easiest to adopt, but they will become a worthwhile habit in no time.

The Art of Living in the Moment

Life is what happens to you right now. It is not a collection of thoughts and memories, it is not a plan for the future. It is right here and now. Still, you continue to think over and over how it was 5 years ago or keep dreaming about the years to come. You forget about your present. You forget to live. You do not even notice when you are happy. You understand that something good is going on but cannot enjoy that because you are far from here – in your past or in your future.

Living in the moment is an art for modern people. We’ve forgotten how to enjoy simple things and how to pay attention to the beauty of life. We are so tensed with the lack of time, with our jobs, with problems that we even do not have time to breathe. Simple things became a luxury. Time is more precious than money. You have no right to enjoy and feel the moment. But is it a good way to spend your life? Perhaps, you could change something and make yourself think different.

  1. Thinking is good. But have a break.

We need to think. All the time. If you do not think, you do not live. You need to generate thousands of ideas per day. You need to be creative. You need to be original. Thinking is better than eating and sleeping. Thinking is the only thing that really deserves your time. Thinking is good. But having some breaks is a necessity. You need to let yourself forget about a permanent process of thinking. Meditation ( is the best way to do that. Do you know that most influential people of this world start a day with meditation? Just try it. Try to free your brain from thoughts. A bonus for meditation is additional space for your unselfconsciousness. When you are not tensed with thoughts, it starts to work and bring you new ideas.

  1. Future is what you create now.

Are you afraid of your future? Do you keep worrying about it all the time? It is not what you need. Worries won’t help you create your future. You can think thousands of ideas, but if you do nothing, they will not help you live better. You need to be active. You need to do something. Remember that you create your future in this moment. And in fact, future is not far from you. Future is here.

  1. Find out what is real.

If thoughts became your reality, you cannot enjoy your life. Thoughts have more influence on the quality of your life than you can imagine. Sometimes, thoughts become even more real than the life itself. Stop living in your thoughts. Take yourself back to the reality. Spend time with your friends, observe the nature, grasp the beauty of what surrounds you. The reality is more beautiful than you think.

  1. Use your mornings.

You do not need to wait until Monday to begin a new life. Use your mornings! When you open your eyes, you have a choice how to spend your day. A good morning can inspire you for a good day. This article ( will help you change your attitude to mornings, discover new ideas how to live in the moment and stop postponing your life.

  1. Find your center

Yoga teaches us that our center is what keeps us balanced in our physic and mental form. If you have no time for regular practices, you can just use some yoga ideas in your life. If there is something you cannot change, just let it go. You do not need this tension. Breathe deeply in any situation. Do not panic, just breathe and feel your body. Your center is the thing that will lead you through your life. Stick to it.

Living in the moment is a challenge. Face it. Show that you can manage your life. It’s all about you and your attitude to what and how you are doing. Live. Breathe. Enjoy.

How your Imagination can make you lightning fast

Heading for a job which requires perfect coordination and control?  Leading a team to do a job with perfect Precision and in the shortest time?

Allow me ten minutes and let me show you how to get the best out of yourself!

Captain D PIc1

Today I wish to talk about how your Imagination can help you win.

A little-known secret

This technique is practiced by athletes and high achievers all over the world. It is a definitive proof of the fact that our imagination is stronger than our will.

In my own professional life, I have practiced this innumerable times and it works like a charm!!

If you are heading for a job where you need perfect teamwork and coordination, as the leader you need to be in perfect control of your senses. If you have that, the job will be done – Quick and Precise. Your performance is most important for the whole thing needs to go in perfect sync!!!

How to use your imagination

Try this. Do it with complete faith. Just believe, and it will work

Take ten minutes out of your time before the job.

  • Relax in a comfortable chair.
  • Sit with your legs apart (not crossed) and relax your body completely.
  • Let your hands rest by the side
  • Let your body loose and limp.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Take deep breaths and focus on your breathing.
  • Relax your body and mind with each breath.
  • Take a back-count from ten to one, relaxing with each count.
  • Get yourself slowly down to a deeply relaxed state.
  • Now simply imagine yourself doing the job you are preparing for.
  • Imagine you are watching yourself from a distance.
  • You are going to do a task which requires you to lead – See yourself absolutely cool and calm, completely in control. You are assigning jobs as the situation requires or carrying out required tasks. No matter how tensed the situation is, you are always composed. Your team members are working with complete confidence in you, and in perfect sync with each other. They are completing the jobs as given. They are working in perfect coordination and teamwork.
  • Make your imagination as vivid as possible. Watch your demeanor and your attitude. See yourself as a high achiever and a perfect leader.
  • Imagine you have completed the task now. You are happy. You are content with your performance. Feel the sense of satisfaction and achievement.
  • Imagine shaking hands with your teammates and sharing the joy. Imagine your superiors complementing you for pulling off a successful venture in record time. Feel the joy inside.
  • When you have imagined the scenario vividly, slowly emerge from the trance.
  • Come back to the rest of the world, very very slowly. Count from one to five this time, with each count bringing you back to a fully alert state.
  • When you reach five, open your eyes slowly and feel the freshness of the dream.

Captain D PIc2

That’s it. You are all set!!

Just go for it now. Be the same happy person leading up to the event and you will see the change in your performance.

The Rules of the Mind

The mind has its own rules. It does not always tell us those rules. But we can find out patterns to break the code. This is one such hack.

People who achieve more than you do not have more intellect. Are they lucky? Not necessarily. Often, their knowledge levels are also just the same.

There are simple techniques which can shoot you up towards success.

The concept of imagination holds unlimited potential. Ten minutes thus spent will be more beneficial than hours of preparation which you might go through. If you can imagine yourself pulling off a job, it will be infinitely easy for you to actually do that in real life.

Try it whenever you are heading for a job where stakes are high, where you have no room for error.

And you can thank me later.

Things to Do Before the Big Yes

There comes a point in our lives where we (well, all right, some of us) eventually have to say goodbye to our fun old bachelor/ette ways and say hello to the brave new world of marriage. We have to use the time we have in the best possible way before we step into this commitment, so that we may be well prepared, and more importantly, honest in our intentions. We are not talking about the things all the boys and girls should do to settle those teenagers within before they say “I do”. No, the things we will discuss are things long-term couples should do together to strengthen their relationship and step into marriage without any doubt, as two souls entwined, not as strangers.

And by the “huge fight” we don’t mean passionate disputes over whose favourite team is better. We mean that dramatic make it or break it fight. If you can handle this stressful event horizon, if you walk through the storm together, you can bet you’ll deal with anything else that comes your way. No matter how ideal your relationship looks, life will throw some nasty curve balls at you and knowing how to dodge and save your partner can save your marriage eventually.

Live together

This way you will be more accustomed to the new situation and make the whole transition seamless. Once your partner starts spending time at your apartment, it’ll take no more than a few sleepovers to until you start sharing a life; consciously or not. Although it might raise some brows in prudish environments, pre-marital joint living is the most beneficial experience for lovers young and old to discover and fall in love with their partner’s little flaws.

Travel together

Once you start living together it would be nice to leave the comfort zone of your apartment and usual social circles and travel abroad, be it for some exciting match, or a more elaborate vacation. This way, aside from the sheer satisfaction you get from life on the road, you will see how your partner faces unpredicted situations and how compatible a couple you actually are, even out of your zone.

Have an honest talk about the birds and bees

There is no way around it, what happens in bed is probably the second most important thing in any relationship and that’s the reason why absolute honesty regarding intercourse is much needed. Talk with your partner about what pleases him, mutually agree on some kind of contraception. Decide if, and when being a parent should become a part of your lives. Avoiding these important topics will only create unnecessary tension between you.

Buy a pet

It is nothing like having a kid, but it is a step in the right direction. Taking care of a living being and sharing that commitment with all of its hardships with the person you love will create a strong bond between you, and prepare you for the sleepless nights of parenthood in the best possible way, without actually including tiny human beings. Sharing a common responsibility and knowing how to work as a team is always a good sign of a strong and stable relationship.

As you can see, there is nothing new here. Just the usual couple stuff. Simply, enjoy your partner and use those precious moments together, and a Happily Ever After will deservedly come to you, too.

5 Signs it’s Time to Drop the Toxic People

We all have had them. Some of us only have one or two left. Some of us have dumped all of them. Toxic, negative, happy energy sucking vampires.

Toxic people are everywhere and unfortunately we will never be completely free of them. The world is full of them. Whether or not we allow them to enter and stay in our lives is another thing. I get that it’s hard to stay away from Aunt Joan because we have to see her at all family holidays. And that co-worker who is always spewing negative garbage is slightly hard to ignore too. I mean, her cubicle is right next to yours.

There’s hope though. We are not, nor do we have to be, slaves to these sour people. The problem isn’t in dumping them, it’s recognizing when it IS time to get rid of them and how to do it without hurting their feelings. The latter I wouldn’t worry too much about it. They are always angry, sad or mad about something, you kicking them to the curb is just another thing for them to bitch about. They’re used to it. Fear not.

Here are 5 signs it’s time and how to diplomatically do it.

  1. You don’t eat lunch in the staff room anymore because the toxicity is too high

Nobody wants to have be subjected to this, especially on break. You can do one of two things: a) you can politely ask the people to kindly keep the talk upbeat and positive. Let them know that this is your room too and you would prefer happy positive talk only. This may not be received well but then, it just may. OR b) avoid the lunch room at all cost. Just stay away, period.

  2. You avoid their calls

Yes, you see their number on call display and let it go to answering machine, again. You have been doing this for over 2 months now. You can’t bear to listen to them go on and on about how horrible EVERYthing is. You can’t ignore them forever. They deserve to know what’s going on. Be honest and tell them. Seriously. Just be upfront and tell them that their negativity is sucking the life out of you and you really don’t like it. This may be exactly what they need to hear in order to change.

  3. Your whole mood changes when you around them

WARNING WARNING WARNING. We all know when we see signs like this that something bad is ahead and we must be guarded and cautious. This holds true for toxic people too. Your guard immediately goes up and you get an anxious and nervous feeling in your body. Ignore them, walk away, remove yourself from the situation or group as quickly as you can. Their energy is contagious and sickening.

  4. Your positivity falls on deaf ears

When you have a friend or acquaintance who is always negative and a Debbie downer and you have desperately tried to turn their outlook and attitude around, to no avail, it’s time to dump her. If she isn’t listening to you it’s because she isn’t ready to listen to you and she never will. Not until she’s ready, no matter how hard you try to shine some positive light into her soul. It won’t work. Get rid of her. When she changes, she’ll come find you.

  5. Your stress level reaches a ridiculous all time high when you see them.

I think we all get like that. We start to get antsy and fidgety. We break out into a sweat and get a nervous energy and sick feeling in our tummy. That person does this to you and then some. Time to say goodbye.

No one should ever make us feel sick or sad or stress us out or anything like that. We should be strong enough to be able to handle it and deal with them. Unfortunately, there are times when we just aren’t. We’re not all superhuman. It’s ok to get rid of toxic people in your life, even if it’s family. Take them in small doses. Get in, say hi, get out. Don’t even ask how they are because that just may be your biggest mistake. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to start dumping toxic crap on you and you’re not interested anyway. At all.

Discover 7 Easy Ways to Help You Achieve Your Goals

Everyone knows that goals are supposed to be the way to help you get what you want in life, set a goal and achieve more. Why do so many people fail to achieve their goals though? It seems so simple; think about what you want, have an intention to achieve it and hopefully your life will change. There are many reasons why you might not be achieving your goals.

Unfortunately, thinking alone will not get you anywhere, neither will simply having a good intention without being prepared for challenges, or not having clarity where to start, or sometimes not even knowing what you want. The real difference lies  in how effectively you set your goals and how much support you give yourself to achieve them after you set them. What I want to do is show you some things you can do to help you boost your success in achieving your goals.

Get clear on your goals – Decide what you want and get clear on your goal as well as:

-your deadline
-how you will measure your goal
-what you need to do to achieve it
-what resources you have and what you will need
-your obstacles and how you will overcome them
-what action steps you need to take

1. Plan effectively

You need to look at your end goal and determine what steps you need to take to achieve your goal. Then you need to include these steps and schedule them into your diary/calendar. Remember to only plan 75% of your time, take routine tasks into consideration, batch where possible and also plan according to your energy levels.

2. Do something

Take action. Planning but then giving into procrastination is not going to get you any results. Most of the time we have a good intention to achieve our goals, and then we hit resistance when taking further action. Preparing for your obstacles and also working through them when they arise are key to achieving your goals. You will come up again resistance often, everybody does, this is called homeostasis, a natural resistance to change. The key is to take action and have plans to keep you moving forward.

3. Keep your goal top of mind

Motivation is pivotal to achieving your goal. Motivation gives you that boost you need to keep going when you feel like giving up. Everyday looking at your goal, reaffirm it to yourself, visual it before you go to bed. Make it part of your daily routine, feel it.

4. Keep focused

Always stay focused on your thoughts and what you are feeling. Are you focusing on what you want to happen or what you are scared will happen? Focus on what you want and not on what you don’t want. Review your goals and progress regularly as well.

5. Commit and Persevere

To achieve any goal, you must be committed and persevere, even when you feel like giving up. Some days will be easier than others but to achieve any goal, you must persevere until you obtain it. Too many people have given up just before they finally achieved success.

6. Act as if

Always believe and have faith that you will achieve your goal and take confident action. To believe in only those things which you can see is not belief at all. If you don’t believe it will happen, it won’t happen. Whatever you believe, you are right. Act as if and expect the best to happen.

7. Journey, not destination

Lastly, stay present, enjoy it, it is about the journey and not the destination. Don’t feel like everything will be fine only once you reach your goal. Find the things that you can be grateful and happy for now and remember that reaching your goal will just make things much better, but don’t have the mindset of ‘when…I will…’

If you have a burning desire to achieve more than you currently are but you feel lost and stuck, remember, it is better to work through those emotions now than to give up on your dreams forever.
